Routes in the Benasque valley for all audiences

Routes in the Benasque valley for all audiences

The Benasque valley, in the heart of the Aragonese Pyrenees, is a must-see destination for hiking and mountain lovers. This privileged natural setting combines majestic mountains, lush forests, crystal-clear rivers, and glacial lakes. Discover the essence of this unique environment with our itineraries for all levels. Along these routes, you'll discover botanical trails, small mountain villages, high-altitude refuges, and some of the most iconic corners of the Pyrenees. A unique place you'll want to return to again and again!

Botanical Trail of the Gorges of Alba

Just a few kilometers from Benasque is the starting point of this route, ideal for exploring the valley's natural beauty. Following the A-139 road toward Llanos del Hospital, after about 9 kilometers, take the turnoff to the right toward Baños de Benasque. Just 600 meters further on, you'll find the Hotel Turpi, next to which there is a parking area. From here, a simple, short, circular route begins, with a gradient of just 130 meters, perfect for families. The trail is designed as a botanical itinerary, with information panels that allow you to identify species characteristic of the valley, such as fir trees, hazel trees, yew trees, beech trees, holly trees, rowan trees, raspberries, and strawberries. Along the way, the vegetation combines with spectacular waterfalls that cascade into the Ésera River, creating a walk that combines nature, learning, and scenic beauty with every step.

Route from the town of Sahún to Villanova

Sahún, a charming mountain village located at an altitude of 1,124 meters on the banks of the Ésera River, is the starting point of a simple and pleasant route that connects it to the town of Villanova. From the Plaza Mayor, you cross the town center to Calle dels Escamps, where the path connecting the two towns begins. The path runs between farms and meadows until reaching a wooden bridge that crosses the Surri ravine. From this point, the route enters an increasingly leafy forest, with stretches of gentle ups and downs. After about five kilometers of walking, you reach Villanova, a small Pyrenean village with barely 170 inhabitants that retains all the charm of peaceful mountain life.

Route from Chía to the Lavasar refuge and Basa de la Mora lake

The route connecting the small town of Chía with the Lavasar refuge and the Basa de la Mora lake is accessible by both bicycle and car. It first covers approximately 25 kilometers of mountain track that connects the Benasque and Bielsa valleys . From the first sections, you can enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Aneto and Maladetas massifs, and upon reaching the Sahún pass , at over 2,000 meters above sea level, the view opens up toward the Chistau valley. The descent leads to picturesque villages such as Plan, Gistaín, and San Juan de Plan, until reaching Saravillo , the starting point for the Lavasar refuge . From here, a track of approximately 10 kilometers with a 1,000-meter gradient leads to the refuge, with access by car for a fee of five euros. Once at the top, a pleasant walk is all it takes to reach the Basa de la Mora lake , one of the most beautiful corners of the Aragonese Pyrenees.

Route of the three waterfalls from Cerler

From Cerler , the highest village in the Aragonese Pyrenees, begins one of the most popular and accessible routes for enjoying the spectacular waters of the high mountains. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through forests, passing by the hermitage of San Pedro Mártir, and continues to the Vadiello Bridge, which crosses the Ardonés ravine. From here, the path narrows and the first views of the Mascarada and Clotet waterfalls appear, before reaching the imposing El Bom or Ardonés waterfalls, where the hike ends. To complete the circular route and descend to the foot of the other two waterfalls, there is a somewhat more technical section with wet and slippery stones, although it is also possible to return to the Vadiello Bridge and access the waterfalls from the other side of the ravine. The return to Cerler takes place along a panoramic trail that offers magnificent views of some of the great peaks of the Pyrenees, such as Posets, Perdiguero, and Gran Bachimala.

Route through the Remuñé ravine and lake

The hike through the Remuñé ravine is one of the most beautiful excursions in the Benasque Valley and begins right where the A-139 road ends. From this point, the trail ascends following the course of the ravine until it reaches the Pleta d'Es Capellans, where a bridge crosses the river. If you choose to cross it, the route continues along somewhat technical scree sections that lead to the Remuñé lake and, a little further up, to the small Remuñé lak. However, the easiest and most recommended alternative is not to cross the bridge and continue along the right side of the valley, a more comfortable path that allows you to contemplate the grandeur of the glacial cirque head-on. From there, you can also reach the Remuñé lake, enjoying high mountain landscapes, and then return along the same trail.

Path to Besurta, La Renclusa refuge and Forau de Aigualluts

The route begins at the Llanos del Hospital parking lot and heads through a landscape of mountain pastures to the Plan d'Están free cabin, next to the lakes that transform into a vast green meadow in summer. The path continues to Besurta, and from this point, the imposing silhouette of Maladeta opens up before us. The route can be made circular, ascending to the La Renclusa refuge, one of the usual starting points for those tackling the ascent of Aneto. After leaving the refuge, the trail gains altitude to offer a privileged panoramic view of the Forau de Aigualluts, a spectacular glacial sinkhole that we circle before descending to the waterfall of the same name to return to the starting point. From Besurta, you can also extend the day to the Villamuerta lakes.
